The Making Of A Vineyard An Apiary And A Winery

First Brightening/First Cycle of Ioannes, Summer, Era XV (pf)

continuation of

http://www.playbypost.com/forums/center-peace-sanctuary/86815-making-vineyard-apiary-winery.html

Oinos has continued keeping the land clear where he intends to establish his vineyard. He has devoted one brightening of each cycle to the removal of new growth and ensuring that roots have been removed. The land is ready for the planting of grape vines. Bee hives are located along the perimeter of the planned vineyard.

He has completed the digging of a wine cellar within the large cottage. It is that structure he intends to use as a winery.

The smaller cottage is now his living quarters as well as his workshop for beekeeping and development of a honey products business. He had continued seeking new bee colonies in order to populate the hives.

Drusilla had been Oinos' partner in finding bees. Today was no exception. As she entered the yard she noticed bees coming in and out of the beehives. She steered away from them giving the bees a wide berth.

Today she had found another hive starting to swarm. She had gotten too close, however, and had a nasty sting on her nose. She was not happy, and before she reached the cottage, she put her nose on down into a small patch of grass and rubbed it back and forth.

Oinos was happy to see Drusilla. It was she who scouted for swarming bees and then came to get Oinos to go after them. Today he noticed that she paused to put her nose on down into a small patch of grass and rub it back and forth. When the Dwarf noticed she had a nasty sting on her nose, he shook his head and said, "You got a bit too close this time". Oinos got down on his knees before her and said, "Come over and I'll try to pull out that stinger". If she complied, he would try to remove the stinger, using his finger nails.

Whether he succeeded or failed in removing the stinger, Oinos got a wet cloth and set it on the stung area if Drusilla allowed it. He would take care not to obstruct her breathing. Once that was done or at least tried, he loaded the usual bee collecting equipment in his cart and followed Drusilla to the site where she found the swarm. From past experience, Oinos had no doubt that she located some bees who were starting to swarm.

Drucilla allowed Oinos to handle her tender nose. She sat patiently while he removed the stinger, then put a cool cloth on her nose for a few minutes. She was reluctant to go back to the bees now and lay there for a few minutes wishing Dagma was there to heal her throbbing nose. When she saw Oinos come back in his beekeeping gear, she got up reluctantly and stretched as if she had all the time in the world.

Looking at him with a bored look, she started off into the woods, never looking back as Oinos followed. About a half kilometer she turned into a very overgrown path and when she came to a huge old oak tree with many knots, she stopped and would go no further. Looking at Oinos she seemed to say, "this is as far as I go, buddy." She found a small patch of grass and daisies and lay down as if her work was done. Within moments her eyes closed and she appeared to fall asleep in the morning sunslight.

Oinos would see a small clearing about 100 feet north where bees were buzzing around another large oak tree which looked to be several hundred eras of age. If he could make it to the clearing without being seen by the bees he might be able to catch some of the emerging swarm.

He did his best with Drucilla's nose. That must have been a tender spot. Too bad that he could not have done better. While she was resting, the Dwarf put on his bee hunting clothing and placed the appropriate gear in the hand cart; box with lid, hat with netting, a scoop and a flat wide spatula. After she stretched, Drucilla went off into the woods. They had not gone far when Drucilla turned into a very overgrown path. She stopped near a huge old oak tree with many knots, then decided to let Oinos do his thing while she took a nap in the morning sunlight.

Oinos could see where the bee activity was so he donned his hat with netting and then his gloves. He then took the wooden box with lid, along with the scoop and spatula walked toward the bee activity, looking for a swarm that settled on something. If need be, he would follow them until they landed somewhere. Though he was learning, this was not one of Oinos' favorite activities. However, if he wanted enough honey to set up a profitable business he needed as many active hives as his area could support. Of course he kept in mind that Drucilla was earning a percentage of the honey that was produced.

M ore and more bees were coming out of the hive and then as if some buzzing language had said "GO" they took off in a westernly direction. They apparently knew where they were going so Oinos needed to grab his gear and follow them quickly.

Drucilla lifted her head and lazily looked at the dwarf, well what are you waiting for dwarfman, follow them. She then put her head back down on the bright yellow and white daisies and started snoring softly.

The timing was better than he hoped for. Good work by Drucilla. Oinos went back to his hand cart, took off his gloves and hat with netting and placed them along with his other gear into the hand cart. He glanced at Drucilla lying in the daisies and already snoring. He took off after the swarm, pushing his hand cart. He wanted to not only keep the swarm in sight but to be near them. There might be rough terrain ahead and he did not want to lose this swarm. He took care not get get near them; no point in getting them upset. According to the book, they should have gorged themselves on honey before swarming and thus be a lot less aggressive than usual. He wanted them to stay that way.

Oinos was beginning to develop an affinity for bees. They were hard workers and took no nonsense from anyone, he liked that. He was indeed growing to like them.

Oinos was getting good at beekeeping and Drucilla was earning her honey one trip at a time. With practiced experience, Oinos was having good luck at catching swarms. Already he had ten hives going thanks to her help.

The engorged bees were soon caught in Oinos trap and he was ready to head back to the farm with the eleventh swarm she had led him to. She watched stoicly while he did his job. Apparently approval from her meant she would keep coming back to her home away from home and helping him. He was certainly catching on quickly.

When the eleventh hive was occupied by bees, the next day Oinos took a moderately long split log and with a knife carved deeply into it:

DRUCILLA PLANTATION

He then secured two posts to it and set it in front of the cottages. Oinos stood back and admired the crude but conspicous sign.

Now his spread had a name as well as now needing to live up to being called a plantation.

Well before he started using honey for his own purposes, Oinos would have a bit on hand as a treat for Drucilla when she came to offer her assistance.

Dagma came by one day after this trip and noticed the sign. She started laughing as Drucilla came up beside her wondering what in the heck she was laughing at.

Seeing Oinos working in the fields she called out to him. "Drucilla's Plantation" eh, look like you and Drucilla are in da Honey business."

Casting a spell she diverted the bees away from the hive for a moment temporarily clearing the hives for inspection of the honey combs. "Ye'll see a good amount of honey in that hive, Oinos."

She pointed to one of the hives, "Should be ready to take some out for both you and Drucilla. Unbeknownst to Oinos she had already accelerated the bees to create more honey than he would expect at this time.

"Da rest should be ready at summer's end. I'll extract this honey for you and Drucilla from this hive. By summer's end I'll teach ye how ta do it."

He joined Dagma in laughing at the sign. In a way it was funny but this was the best way he could think of acknowledging Drucilla's part in getting everything set up and running. Of course he knew that as far as Drucilla was concerned, a regular offering of honey was enough.

Oinos said, "Drucilla is indeed a part of the honey business. That book is a big help but Drucilla helps past that."

When Dagma pointed out that there was a good amount of honey in one of the hives, he was quite pleased. Further, when the Druid said she would extract the honey this time and teach him how at the summer's end, Oinos was more than ready for her to do so. Since there would enough from this one for both him and Drucilla, Oinos would mete it out for both of them. However, the end of summer was near and he had better make plans for a full harvest. It was high time to turn a profit and getting a business established.

"Da rest should be ready at summer's end. I'll extract this honey for you and Drucilla from this hive. By summer's end I'll teach ye how ta do it."

Dagma went over to the hive and pulled up a honeycomb which was full of honey. With her other hand she produced a large sized jar from one of her many ample pockets. Using only her head she transferred honey from the comb to the jar before replacing the comb in the hive.

"Should have time to fill up again," she said handing Oinos the jar of honey. Now I won't be able to teach you how to get honey like I did, not yet anyway, but I'll come back soon and we'll get ye harvesting. Ye got enough experience ta learn more of beekeeping."

Drucilla lured by the smell of the honey began pacing around and around Oinos, like she was saying, give me my honey, now!

ooc: Make one more post. I need to read up on your beekeeping training, but go ahead and make a training thread if you've finished your other training, except for horsetraining so we can start ... ugh forgot druidism. Let's finish your horsetraining then next level up your beekeeping.

Oinos saw Dagma transfer the honey from the comb to the jar, but had no idea how she did it. God enough that she'd be back for harvesting. No point in rushing matters, he was not expecting all that honey this soon.

With her pacing around him, Drucilla did a good job of letting her desires be known, so Oinos got a tin plate and poured some honey onto it. He then set it on the ground before the cat and said, "Enjoy it". He then placed the jar of honey in a pocket.

Looking around at the active hives and the added plants and trees to keep the bees happy, Oinos was rather pleased with the progress that had been made. There was a lot more to do but he was in no hurry and confident that it would all get done soon enough.
