I really...really....hate cars.

Posted June 24, 2008 at 06:53 PM by Veleraen
Ya know, ever since I got my car. It's been a real pain in the butt.

I have had it for approximately 4 1/2 years now. It's a 1990 Toyota Camry.

Since it has:
1) Been broken into (twice)
2) Been stolen (once)
3) Had 3 blown tires.
4) The sunroof has never worked.
5) It has been hit by a taxi cab at 2am. (In front of my friend's house while parked on the side of the street in a quiet neighbourhood where you'd THINK that would never happen, but it did happen because it's you and it's your car and its cursed. The taxi actually blew out both of my tires on the left side, took off the left mirror and totally shifted the suspension two inches diagonally. I didn't actually realize this until all four of my tires started to show the steel belts after just buying them 4 months earlier.

6) The trunk still leaks slightly ever since the taxi hit me.
7) The bottom plastic guard that covers the gas tank flew off after hitting an enormous puddle.
8) The gas tank lid broke off.
9) I have had to replace the gas tank cap twice.
10) It has had the starter replaced on it with a rebuilt one.
11) The alternator has been replaced on it.
12) It's had two batteries in four and a half years.

AND NOW

13) It has an electrical problem. The rear lights are still running and sucking power from the battery, killing it after a good 30 mins being parked. Since the lights are running full bore all the time, the car can't recharge the battery fast enough and it's just killing my battery.

The real problem is actually tracking down the problem as to why that is doing that. So....All I can do is hope and pray that my brother (who is a graduated student from an automotive problem and my dad, who has worked with cars almost all his life) can fix this for me lol.

I pray to thee Aslan! Fix my car and my life shall be yours! (It is already, i'm just askin' for a little leadway here)

Cars....

Never was there invented a more ingenious way of sucking more money than you'd ever consciously decide to spend into something that is just too convenient to stop using.

This is why I've always wanted a sedan chair and the copious sort of free time you need to get places in such a contraption.

But if I may be so rude as to offer advice to a person who is venting, the way I avoid most car trouble is selling my cars when they get to 100,000 miles. Most of a car's troubles usually happens after then, not counting taxis that try to crush you.

I realize that this isn't necessarily useful advice to a lot of people on this board since so many of you seem to be college students, but it is a good method if you can afford it.

(Edit: this is Vel btw)

Well, my car, has like 100,000 kilometres on it, which is like....60,000 miles. Or something like that. And it being a car that is almost 20 years old, that is quite good. It came in original condition and the insurance is quite minimal, only like $140/month and i barely drive it, except for on weekends, which is perfect for me cause i can't afford to drive it during the week to school (costs wayyyyy too much money).

I will probably eventually sell it if I decide to go transit all the way for a good period of my life but if i get the job i want, that might not happen, we'll see.

But adder is right....It sucks out allll your money lol.

Mmmmm my car is a bit over the 200,000 mile mark now and is only now starting to push it a bit. Some cars die at 100k, others, especially diesels are very happy to go well past that. It really depends on how its been used. A car with 20k on the clock can cause many more problems than one with 120k if all it has done is short journeys with poor servicing.

My Toyota 4Runner is at 230,000 miles and is just now beginning to ebb on the transmission a bit. Generally, I've decided it depends on the make and company of the car; the unspoken rule is that some brands are better than same, etc. etc.

Hmm, my focus is still all right ... but I know the pain. I had a blown tire once and it took 3 hours for the guys at a FORD DEALERSHIP to fix it.

Hurray America!
