Goodbye, dear friend

Every time a hallway's too quiet.

Every time our students complain that history's too boring.

Every time someone is overlooked because of the color of their skin.

Every time no one speaks up against the uncomfortable things.

Every time there's an awkward silence left by an unsaid story.

Every time we forget where we came from.

You will be missed, every time.

UPDATE: And now I just found out another beloved colleague was taken to the ER with a stroke yesterday. He is recovering. But still.

If trouble comes in threes, I'm missing one more tragedy.

You have my sympathies, Malia. Losing a colleague that you're close to must be a very hard thing, especially one so abundantly great as that article portrayed that man. I do hope things turn out good for the other colleague whose had a stroke. Best of wishes to that man.

You seem to have beautiful memories of your friend and colleague, and he seems like an amazing person who contributed a lot to the lives of other people. My sympathies... and I, too, hope the man in the ER makes a smooth and full recovery. My thoughts and well wishes are with everyone affected by these tragedies.

Thanks guys. Mayo was indeed a one of a kind man whose kindness and compassion to a new coworker blossomed into a deep respect and admiration. He was a wonderful teacher, scholar, mentor, friend, and champion, and the world is a darker place after his loss.

My other colleague is recovering well after his stroke, but it was a frightening experience to all of us nonetheless. Your warm thoughts and prayers for his recovery and his family are much appreciated. Thank you for your sympathy; it warms my heart during a very difficult time.
