Goodbye, dear friend

Every time a hallway's too quiet.

Every time our students complain that history's too boring.

Every time someone is overlooked because of the color of their skin.

Every time no one speaks up against the uncomfortable things.

Every time there's an awkward silence left by an unsaid story.

Every time we forget where we came from.

You will be missed, every time.

Moments such as these...

Posted August 17, 2014 at 10:37 PM by Tiyribi Andares

My grandfather was born right before the Great Depression as the oldest of six children. His childhood was spent in the dust-bowl that Iowa farmland became--something dour and grey in like Dorothy in Kansas before the tornado comes. It became an even more somber moment when his own father died, leaving my grandfather as the man of the house at thirteen. So, in typical fashion, he quit school without a complaint and went to work, shuffling boxes around warehouses or selling goods from door to door...

"The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education." --Albert Einstein

Due to extenuating circumstances (i.e., my having no voice), I had to conduct an experiment in my introductory chemistry lecture today on having students teach themselves. In a sense, it was a bit of an inverted classroom, too.

In a word, it was both miserable success and grandiose failure.

They had been introduced to the topic previously in their lab courses as well as having been asked to read ahead in the textbook, and then were given another handout that went through...

"As a young, funny, and brilliant woman in science, Professor R became more than just a teacher; she is my role model. 'Chemistry is just innovative problem solving,' she would always tell us, and her teaching style was a living representation of that. Anytime I had trouble with a question or topic, she would break it down into smaller, simpler questions that led back to the original so that I would see how it all connected. She will always be an inspiration to me."

The Spirit of the Marathon

I am a documentary fiend. I love watching well-done films that follow ordinary people as they struggle and triumph through this terrible and wonderful thing we call life. Recently I watched one entitled, The Spirit of the Marathon that chronicles the months leading up to and then the actual day of the Chicago Marathon. It follows the stories of a variety of runners of all different levels, from the elite (including the women's American Record holder) to a couple trying to qualify for the Boston...
