Aelyria: Game Walkthrough

When I started playing almost ten years ago, I found the game, registered, and then promptly looked for a walkthrough

For better or for worst, Aelyria is not that kind of game. There's no 'main plot' and 'side quests'. Everything you do has the potential to be epic, tedious, or both. It's an ever-changing metagame that inevitably merges IC with OOC, RL with IG. That's the beauty of Aelyria, and also it's biggest flaw.

Humans drive the game engine, the NPCs, the story, the length, and the richness of the game. We are simultaneously unlimited and limited.

Being busy IRL has an unusual impact in my gaming life. I found myself turning back to my PS3. It's predictable, it doesn't nag me to play it, and I can play for as much or as little as I want without being attached to it.

That worked out while I was busy. But whenever I found some downtime (like today), I crept back to the old posting boards and found the thrill of the unexpected, the amusement in the awkward, and the hilarity in the old characters I've seen through the years.

Aelyria is like home to many of us. We go off on our own adventures, sometimes leaving for years. But when those goals have been attained or we've settled at last we return to our old room where we learned how to create, cooperate, compete, and conquer new heights.

if you're here because you wanted a walkthrough, I feel that I must leave you with some nuggets of wisdom I've learned over the years. Happy Adventuring!

Aelyrian Tips and Tricks:

1. Look for Activity - you don't want your starting city to be the one without a GM. BUT - do not automatically go to the busiest city. When a moderator/ moderation team is overworked, they burn out and no one gets moderated.

2. Number One is overrated - As mentioned above, 'the most active city' or 'most popular city' might not be the best place to start. For example, Aelyria Prime is the capital, it's mentioned everywhere, but you can probably find suggestions for a better starting city based on your character if you spend the time to introduce yourself in the Tavern and ask for recommendations.

3. Character, Character, Character - don't rip off characters from movies. You will find your motivation for the character disappearing in a few weeks, or even months. (Trust me, I've made alts inspired by many, many movies. All of them are retired lmao). You want an open-ended character that has space to grow, flexibility, and a history that you can use as a reference point and related to. Cliches are boring, but if they help feel free to use any or all of them!

4. Hyperposting is not a Norm - you may find your posts being responded to in less than an hour. Or if you've met GM Aglet, your posts might be replied to in less than half an hour. If you do get lucky, pat yourself in the back and don't ever expect it again. Seriously. Your posts are not being responded to by a super advanced artificial intelligence program. It's another person on the other side of that screen who has fluctuating creativity, time engagements, and other (yes!) threads to post to.

5. Elitists Only Allowed - actually, the opposite of that is true. Sometimes I found that 90% of the time, I find myself unable to post because I want to be elegant and magnificent in my writing. Sometimes it's better to post a couple of lines, so long as it's not total space-filler / spam. When we force extended posts for short replies, we end up lagging and leeching our creativity through unneeded stress. Keep in mind that in a moderated scenario, EFFORT (CAPS!) is a huge motivating factor for mods. If your post is crappy, it's not going to inspire your moderator to reply to you.

6. Volunteers Required - Moderators and Super Moderators are volunteering to accommodate a work-like schedule ON TOP of their actual work/life schedule for your benefit. Yes, YOUR benefit. Show some respect, understanding, and appreciation. If you can't, go play single-player games.

7. We Are Family - or a community. Or a cult. Whichever one, really. We may bicker, fight, and claw at each other from time to time - but that's what happens when you put a bunch of colorful individuals with varying backgrounds, perspectives, and intellectual levels in one world. Again, be respectful. You don't have to agree, but you don't have to have flame wars about it either. It's disruptive, counterproductive, and you'll get banned

8. I Heart Aelyria - if you really want to support the community but you don't have time to become a moderator or contribute in the World Forge, become a Companion. Join the Society. Sponsor other peoples' Companionships. It's five bucks a month. That's less than sponsoring a child. But it's the same chemical reaction that rewards charitable good works.

9. Vacations - Staff go on vacations!?!? They go to school??!! They have families!?!!!? Yes. There are significant 'downtimes' in activity across the board - usually during the winter holidays and finals week. Sometimes people just disappear due to RL. That's why the gods (mostly the MT) created Peer Moderation. Your character always wanted to learn how to sew AND be a carpenter? Good thing there's eHow.

10. Resistance is Futile - a lot of people tend to think that super moderators are like invisible, crazy deities. They are, but not all of the time. They are more likely to help you, or nudge you when you're doing something against the rules. They're not secret police. But you can't go against them and win. Especially if you're wrong. Collectively, they are the most experienced players on the board with knowledge that predates this current forum AND the one before it. If you're trying to abuse a loop hole, they'll notice.

I agree with what you said and find it very helpful. People often forget particular aspects of the game like the waiting times or request for quality. This sounds like a good reminder, short and precise.

    Thanks for that.

I have to say that I agree with, well everything that you wrote. Also for a walkthrough I think that was the best that could have been written for Aelyria. I think that it is great to see something like that written up, especially for those that might not be quite accustomed to the ways of Aelyria thus far. I hope they find their way to your blog post here.
