All Posts Are Not Created Equal

I've been getting a lot of questions about moderating lately. First of all, I want to credit all those past and present moderators who continue to inspire me. Nearly all of my adventure 'types' are derived from their sometimes groundbreaking style of moderation.

Juan / the Creator showed that the right story, with the right scale, can be game-changing. He inspired the little 'objective boxes' that I now use to drive the story forward both IC and OOC.

Charybdis' use of short, quick posts in her Labyrinth series showed me that many players enjoy this kind of 'quickie' modes. It also inspired me to adapt Juan's style and hers to better accommodate multiple, sometimes dozens, of Player Characters in a single thread. She also made good use of limiting Rounds, which created an expiration point for the thread and quest.

Maddyn's story writing is very whimsical on the surface. But it is deeply psychological and is intended to challenge the character in very unpredictable ways. His version of story writing does not need any 'big' things to happen to permanently affect your character's development and story.

Wynd's style was similar to Maddyn but much more serious and brooding. It was filled with gothic drama and created a perfect setting using a myriad of IC history. Whenever Wynd wrote about Jaedaxia, the city felt alive and it was amazing to witness.

A lot of Players have been asking me about thread load, how many PCs I mod, and if I schedule time to post, etc. The easy answer is: "Yes." The long answer is thus:

1. Not all posts take the same amount of time. It all depends on the thread, PC(s), and the current point in the story.

2. Mods have their preferred type of threads. This is OK. In fact, I would encourage mods to be picky in this regard. Adventure and fighting threads are my jam. So they're easy for me to write and generate on the fly.

3. Many type of stories and thread types become easier with time. Political threads are now very exciting for me. "Wandering around the wilderness" threads are now fun thanks to all the work Indefinite and so many other mods in the Working Group have done to update and fill our Wiki / Lore. Posts that involve the wiki take a moderate amount of time.

4. Next time you see a mod, hug them. I am constantly using everyone's work as a backbone to my threads. Whether it's historical information or environmental data, their work is invaluable. If I have to pull that from somewhere, the post is going to take some time since I'm obviously unfamiliar with that part of the game world.

5. Adding PCs into the mix is not additive in effort but exponential. Many PCs mean many variables, actions, and reactions that happen co-dependently of each other. You are now playing on multiple levels that may conflict with the story you wanted. This is both frustrating and extremely enjoyable -- depending on how you handle it. A thread with 5 PCs may take me 1-2 hours to post for. A thread with 10+ takes about 4-5 hours to draft, re-read, revise, and finally post.

6. I've said it once and I'll say it again: your mods are Players, too. This means that I have my own PC that I'm trying to post for and have things to do. So if you love Aelyria as much as we do, please contribute and check out the Matchmaker forums frequently. In fact, subscribe to that along with the Questions and Welcome forums

@ Rhys - politics is supposed to be scary.

I think Shei said it best in his Peer Mod office. Politics is sort of the 'end game' difficulty for Aelyria. It's the only place where you can lose everything in a single post.

One wrong word, one bad move is all it takes to destroy years of RP. PvP is very real in politics and it can create ripples that end in unpredictable and dramatic ways.

But some are more equal than others?

In all honesty though, Marwin really is one of the coolest mods around. We have differing styles of RP, but his enthusiasm, his willingness to create plots and create fun in our community is infectious, if not admirable.

Keep doing what you're doing, compadre!

That makes sense, Stray. It would explain why modding them is such an intimidating thought, given that I still struggle with providing tantalizing risks, and politics is very centralized around an unfamiliar style of risk for me.

So... if politics is the endgame difficulty and a badly phrased word can get you in trouble. What you're saying is that if you screw up in a combat thread, you're not really going to be punished for it? That the mods are always going to look kindly on a thing like that?
