The best great books of all time.

One of the side effects of having a young child is that your time gets chopped up into little pieces. I still get time to read, but what with one thing or another my reading time occurs in quick snatches, and amounts to no more than an hour or so a day except on special occasions.
The more limited your reading time, the more important it is to have a really good book. So, I thought I would ask the populous of Aelyria- what is on your list of favorite great books? Why the awkward phrasing? I am being ambitious, and hoping for books that are not only your favorite, but also great.
For example, I enjoy reading Larry Niven's Inferno. I pull it off the shelf every year or two and give it a quick read, and enjoy every minute. But it isn't a great book. For some reason I enjoy it quite a bit, but it wouldn't be on my list of recommendations to very many other people because it is not especially clever or insightful, it just works for my particular brain.
At the moment my top two suggestions for books which are favorites and which I think are truly excellent pieces of writing would probably be Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49, and Kingsley Amis' Lucky Jim.
I am interested in the opinions of all who wish to share.

I know exactly how you feel about that. I have a 13 month old, and when he is sleeping I try to grab a book or jump online to get a few posts in, well when there is time from the other 100 things that need to be caught up on. He is the muse for this PC anyways.
If I can think of some recommendations I will send them your way. |
