Confessions of a Flake

Posted June 21, 2014 at 07:28 PM by Larien Gil'dae

I am a flaky player. I always have been.

I first joined Aelyria (back before the name change!) back in 2001 or 2002 (math is not my forte). And I went through several horrible characters before I finally created Larien and I've been with her ever since.

And I have a horrible reputation for disappearing for long periods of time at rather inconvenient moments. This last break was 6 years! But I always come back.

Eventually.

But anyway, I just felt like confessing a few things. Because YOLO (or, you know, if you manage to get resurrected, then YOLT). <-- Credit to Kael for that joke.

1. Larien's changed so much since I first created her 11 years ago that I sometimes don't know how she would react to things.
Larien began as Larien Calafalas, a very simple (ie. stupid) country girl from Natura. I used to RP that she believed she had been cursed to always tell the truth. Which was hilarious. Especially when she began to get into politics. (Painfully honest politician, anyone?) And then she realized she was a Gil'dae and our stupid country girl turned into a vain, stupid girl with a crippling love of material things. And now? Larien's a sometimes scary, sometimes mildly alcoholic and jaded woman who's apparently good at solving riddles. (L1 riddle-solving! Heck yes)

2. Apparently I tend to disappear once Larien develops... a love interest?
Not intentionally, of course. Just looking back on my disappearing acts over the years, I began to notice a pattern. Whenever things were getting "serious" (ie. marriage is on the horizon, oh no), POOF. There I'd go. I wonder what this says about me. Maybe, deep down, I'd just rather Larien suffer and be #foreveralone. (Poor Larien).

3. Larien is one of the only female characters I've ever RPed.
Even though I'm female IRL, I usually RP male characters. Why? I grew up playing on play-by-post games. I've been RPing since I was 11. And most of the games I played on were overrun with girls who only wanted to play as girls. So I tended to play as boys to even out the playing field. Unfortunately for them, I always tended to play characters who didn't work well as love interests. Such as eunuchs. Or sadistic villains who were too busy destroying the world.

4. I'm an OOC elf snob.
I've been playing elves so long that I sometimes wonder if I could RP as anything else. Which is why I don't have any alts. There's no point in me playing multiple elf characters.

5. I rarely plan things in advance.
Even though I play Larien as being the type of person to plan everything out to the very last detail, I rarely plan anything myself. When I start a thread, I have no idea what I want to do with it (generally speaking). Long-term goals for Larien? No idea. Besides the obvious. Try not to die. (Or disappear again. But we'll see how that goes).

I thought this was going to be about corn flakes, not elves

Heh. I'm sort of the anti-Larien I guess. I'm male IRL and usually run female PCs. I'm also sort of an OOC anti-elf snob; they seem like idealized humans to me and I'm all about character flaws.

Lol, Darian. Nah, I'm not a fan of corn flakes.

Mixie - I can see that. But I think even elves are riddled with flaws! I mean, I try to play Larien as being abrasively arrogant and proud. She's immensely vain and materialistic. And she's also not a ravishing beauty (at least I don't play her that way even though the new avatar is really pretty. I'm a graphics whore IRL, so I couldn't help myself). And she's mildly claustrophobic and slowly turning into an alcoholic.

It's just all how the character is developed, I think.

Yeah, there certainly can be elves with flaws. I dunno, they just somehow seem like a race of the cool kids from high school to me. Irrational I suppose.

Does that make Mixie the homely goth kid from school? I know my PC, Limbus, fit into that category.

Either that or the loner who goes on to start a software company or commits a shocking crime.
