    Just an FYI

I had this awesome NPC who was about to give out epic lewts.... and then the PC killed the NPC >: (

But seriously love the series. It's creepy how it eerily reflects on the continuous debate if violence in video games simply channels our true nature.

Fav character have to be that noobie William. Did not expect the plot twist, but I knew he will not stay naive that long. It's always like that. Every eager new timer will soon turn into a hardened ganker. They always do.

I especially love Anthony Hopkins' character. (No surprise, right?) I can't help but cheer him on, the villainous Creator, as he protects his creation!

    Storytelling

Love this! No other game world brings me back (will have me back...?) like this one does, year after year. I've found that when players reminisce about past stories, they don't linger fondly over perfectly laid plans that were perfectly executed; we laugh, complain, boast, shake our heads, and admire the twists and the things "gone wrong"- all of those things that truly made the threads great, and made our characters what they are. The surprises are the best part.

    Storytelling

I've enjoyed reading Grim's blog post, and I enjoyed yours. For me, Aelyria stands and falls with interaction. I don't think I'd be able to write in isolation.

Shalafi's style of moderating is very close to my own. I mostly start with a framework (goals, vague outlines) when starting a new thread. That stays in the back of my mind (not in the front) when I'm posting. I like it when PCs take hints, and when they don't or interpret them in an entirely different way. It's challenging, and it makes me consider my own plotline and NPCs.

What I struggle with, at times, is when to conclude a thread and how to do so in a way that is satisfying for players. The XP is nice and all, but in the end it's about character building mostly.

    Storytelling

We are, indeed, all in it together.

And I think people tend to grossly underestimate how much winging is actually going on... at all levels of the game.

I mean, really, isn't the winging part of the beauty that Stray is talking about? The fact that nobody actually knows what's going to happen next?

    Storytelling

I'm still trying to figure out my moderation style. As a player I often find the most satisfying threads to be ones where I enter without a clear idea of the story I want to tell (experience? co-tell?) and the mod rattles my PC around, or I get to flex my writing skills, and my PC's actual skills in unexpected ways. But I also like it when a mod is flexible enough to follow in a direction that my PC (who loves to derail and outthink a situation) takes things.

As a mod, I'd like to get better at balancing these two desires... sometimes, like in life, what we want for our PCs in a particular story is not possible (skill two low, reality does not bend that way, noodle arms vs giant minotaur, etc) or not what the PC needs. I'm happy with how I play as a PC at this point, and I'd love to get better at modding, so you veterans keep the good meta blog content coming, because it's very helpful to me as someone who is still trying to figure out how to mod.

    Storytelling

Well said. I personally tend to "wing it". I have a general outline where I think benchmarks will be achieved/reached, possible subplots, and potential outcomes. I do like to take it where the players take it, however, and sometimes that does go way off the rails. Other times they fall right into my traps.

So... if politics is the endgame difficulty and a badly phrased word can get you in trouble. What you're saying is that if you screw up in a combat thread, you're not really going to be punished for it? That the mods are always going to look kindly on a thing like that?

That makes sense, Stray. It would explain why modding them is such an intimidating thought, given that I still struggle with providing tantalizing risks, and politics is very centralized around an unfamiliar style of risk for me.

But some are more equal than others?

In all honesty though, Marwin really is one of the coolest mods around. We have differing styles of RP, but his enthusiasm, his willingness to create plots and create fun in our community is infectious, if not admirable.

Keep doing what you're doing, compadre!

@ Rhys - politics is supposed to be scary.

I think Shei said it best in his Peer Mod office. Politics is sort of the 'end game' difficulty for Aelyria. It's the only place where you can lose everything in a single post.

One wrong word, one bad move is all it takes to destroy years of RP. PvP is very real in politics and it can create ripples that end in unpredictable and dramatic ways.
