One of the more unnerving inhabitants of mountain pools, blackwater are nocturnal creatures that, unless disturbed, spend the daylight hours in crevices under rocks. When night falls, they emerge and feed. On body heat. Darkwaters draw sustenance by sapping the warmth from hapless mammals that stray into the water after nightfall. Their appearance is that of an oversized and dense cloud of black ink in a rough ball, about on meter across, but they are quite capable of flattening out and spreading across the surface of the water. Their dark coloration explains their reluctance to come out in the daylight, as they would be easily spotted. Traditional combat with a darkwater is all but impossible, but magic, cold and salt are effective weapons against them.

The first sign of a blackwater attack is a spreading feeling of numbness, and the water suddenly becoming colder. Unfortunately, many attribute this so chilly night air, and hardly even notice as the cold fogs their brain. Of course, the existence of blackwaters gives parents an excellent cautionary tale to dissuade would be young lovers from illicit midnight swims.
