Abstract Description
The Hwandi'Nyano or "Fungus Rat" is a native creature of Quel'anthas, rarely being found elsewhere. Noted as pesky vermin, the Hwandi'Nyano actually serve an important purpose to the city and its inhabitants. Often referred to as an animated waste basket by Professors of Bestiary, this small mammal lives off of the mold and fungus that grows on city surfaces, "cleaning" the surface of its presence.. Anything from rocks to cobblestones, anywhere from basements to rooftops, if it has a chance to grow mold or fungus, then the Hwandi'Nyano can be found there devouring and scavenging.
Physical Appearance
This small mammal is at most only six inches in length, with an additional tail length of five inches. They are very petite and slim rodents, the smallest of which can be only three inches with a three inch tail. Their fur ranges in shades of green to grey, anywhere from dark-forest green to a light, foggy grey. Their ears are quite short and compliment their short, stubby noses. The eyes, round and small, are usually black. Tiny claws, imbedded in the tiny paws are used mainly for climbing and secondly for scraping mold and fungus. Their tale, usually a dull grey, the same color as their skin. These rodents live to be at most nine patterns old, but the average age is seven patterns.
Climate/Terrain
This creature is found almost exclusively on the streets and roof tops of Quel'anthas. Scholars aren't sure exactly why, but ideas have been thrown about. Some believe that the species would be unable to find enough blatant mold to survive the trek to another city. This is usually considered the most profound theory and is widely accepted.
Organization
The Hwandi'Nyano seemingly have no organization at all. Mentally, non-sentient, the "Fungus Rats" reproduce in large numbers, sometimes twenty at a time, and dissipate almost immediately. The mothers don't watch after their young, and rarely do two sibilings stay in one another's company. This is the major reason that fifty percent of Hwandi'Nyano die before maturity (three yendeas)
Combat
The Hwandi'Nyano's major defense against predators is large reproduction rates. The rodent itself lacks any significant defense or combative characteristics. Their small bodies usually prove useful in escape attempt, which is the normal tactic taken when threatened.
Special Abilities
It said by Scholars that the Hwandi'Nyano's fur acts much like plantlife in that it produces oxygen with the fungus/mold consumed. For this reason, Hwandi-Nyano are seen as a necessary part of Quel'anthas life and not commonly destroyed in large numbers.
Resistances
Hwandi-Nyano have amazing digestive systems, able to digest fungus and mold without suffering from toxins and disease they may carry. Extremely potent digestive enzymes are credited to this.
