Any luck, any at all? (Carly)

Danerec traveled quickly down the street, peering around bodies traveling in other directions at the buildings he walked past. He had been told at the circus of someone who could give him a little luck, for the right price, and he was desperate to get just that. I'm gonna need all the luck I can get, he thought. What was I thinking, saying I'll go along?

bumping into a lady on the street as he turned to examine a building he had passed more closely, Danerec nearly jumped out of his skin and excused himself after biting down a less polite phrase spawning from his fright. He realized the lady looked quite young, not to mention quite shorter than himself. Her skin was blue, and Danerec noted green slashes on her neck. The young lady's clothing was rather loud, colors jumping out at Danerec's eyes screaming, "Look at me!" Realizing he had chanced upon the person he was looking for, Danerec stopped and asked, "Excuse me, are you Carly Jr'ana the Ikomancer?"

The description I got in the circus made me think she was older, he thought. And no one said she was...what is she? Danerec noted the green splotches on the blue skin, the blonde hair, and the pointed ears sticking out. Must be some sort of elf...

[Carly Jr'ana]

Carly Jr'ana, Adept Ikomancer, Councilor of Ikos to the Imperial Magus, and general purveyor of mass amounts of fish was minding her own business and happily poking her nose into places where it probably didn't belong when a very nosey young man came along and asked her if she was herself.

Being blue, and small, and generally carrying around a ring that made her somewhat more unnoticable then your standard small blue figure she looked around to make sure there might not be any other Ikomancers named Carly Jr'ana before addressing the man. The expression on his face made her do a double take as he appeared to be trying to determine why she was blue, she sighed outwardly and stuck a hand on her hip with exasperation. How could anyone who spent any amount of time within the capital of the Empire not at least hear about a sea elf?
"Yes, I am. How may I be of assistance to such a curious young human, remembering of course that curiosity killed the cat and cats are significantly smaller then most two legged land walkers."

[Danerec]

Danerec was slightly offended at being called a human, but he let it slide. Correcting her on his heritage wasn't as important as why he had come to see her. Which, now that he thought about it, seemed more foolish than important. This is probably going to be an eventless trip, he thought, referring to the upcoming one with Tarfuss and Eyvind and the lot. Or if something does happen, I doubt luck will save you...

"I was wondering if perhaps you'd be able to charm a ring to give luck to its wearer?" Danerec asked. "It's just that I'm leaving in a few days on a trek that could turn quite dangerous, and anything to help me stay alive would be appreciated..." Could turn dangerous--ha! More like dooming yourself before you step outside the city. he thought to himself.

Carly's right eye brow rose ever so surrepticiously as she listened to the request, it was not a request from someone who knew anything about Ikos other then that it had something to do with luck. Much like someone asking an elementalist if they could do stuff with fire, Danerec was asking Carly if she knew how to mess around with luck. However he gave no specifics, no idea what to do with that luck. Of course, on the flip side there was always the concept of profit.

"For a price I can easily 'charm' you a ring to give luck to its wearer, however if you really wanted the ring to be of any use you'll have to be more specific. Did you just want to be lucky in not getting hurt? Or luck with... the ladies, or luck with the dice? There are many kinds of luck, if you just asked for it in general you might not get the right kind at the right moment."

Danerec realized he had been quite vague in his request, and nearly blushed. One particular reason you're definitely not cut out to be a mage of any sort, he thought.

"I'm sorry, I meant luck in battle, not getting hit, that sorta thing." Danerec thought on how steep the price tag for this service might be, meanwhile mentally counting the coins he had left after his previous purchases for the trip.

"Currently I'm pretty strapped for cash though. If you could wait for a few cycles though I might be able to pay you more fully, unless two-hundred twenty-seven crowns is enough?" Danerec was almost positive that it wouldn't be, but he couldn't help trying to be optimistic.

She mused upon the thought, her runes spinning in her head like little turnips balanced on a mill stone, the turnips spun as the stone spun and they all spun around her head. The dizzying thoughts came together to form a possible sigil for an item, she had created two seperate sigils that were quite similar to this one, though she had trouble remembering when and what. On the exterior she merely nodded, looked thoughtful, and shuffled a foot on the cobbles as the other spoke.

The prospect of price was always a tricky one, she never really charged an extravagant amount but being a greedy little elf any price the customer suggested would always be too low. She hmm'd and hawwed at Danerec. "Well, sadly for this sort of Sigil the materials can be rather a lot. And the more likely you want the blessing to work, the more time I have to spend on it. So the asking price would be more around the three hundred crown mark.

I assume you have a ring you'll want blessed? If not you'll have to purchase one yourself, unfortuanately I am not a jeweller."

"I do have one, here," Danerec removed his silver ring with a jade stone and handed it to the Ikomancer.

"I'm going to need the ring back by the 26th though, as that's when I travel. I don't have any more coins than I've mentioned however...If you'll let me pay you the rest after, with interest perhaps, I believe I'll be able to pay you fully within a month." Danerec was horrible at haggling. He either had troubles with offering too much, and being had, or offering too little, and offending the other participant in the haggling. My parents were merchants, and I can't haggle worth a spit; how sad am I?

Carly took the ring with the pretty green stone and looked it over before stashing it in a pocket, she noted that the 26th was six days away and certainly enough time in which to construct a suitable sigil and bless this piece of silver. She saw the look of ... dissappointment on the boy's face and grimmaced at him. Technically she had enough money that another three hundred crowns would not add too significantly, enough money for what she wanted least ways. What she needed now was people, and time...

"Fine, I'll do it for one hundred crowns. On the sole condition that you tell as many people as you can about the fabulous skills and generosity of Carly Jr'ana the Ikomancer. Deal?"

OOC: You wrote 'ago,' I think you meant 'away.' Just pointing that out...

Danerec's face lighted up. Carly's offer was better than he'd hoped for. As for getting word around about her, he could definitely do that. I work in a circus, for crying out loud. Billboards alone could get the message across, or I could spread the word by mouth when people are out walking through the various carny tents.

"Definitely a deal!" Danerec said, thanking Carly profusely. "Where should I find you on the 26th to get the ring back?" he asked as he pulled out a pouch of coins to count out the right amount.

Carly held out a small blue hand to shake on the deal, and recieve the hundred crowns with which she would immediately purchase a large quantity of paints and chalk. A suitable place to meet was either here, or the boy could come by her office at the Imperial Magus's suites. No need to scare the boy with all that pomp and fancy carpets.

"Here, around the midbrightening meal if you can manage it. I'll have your ring for you."

And with that little sentence she took her hundred crowns off to buy her materials and continue on with what she had originally planned to do, she had come out to buy materials for her own sigils only to discover on the street that she had forgot her purse. It was seemingly very lucky then that someone had come up with such an offer so immediately. As she disappeared into the crowd the fully formed sigil came to life within her mind, the intent burned upon her brow. The wearer of this ring will find luck in battle, no harm will come to them.

In her own time Carly set aside an afternoon in which to bless the ring, inks and paints began to form the mosaic of Lopeter for the battle, building the larger rune out of smaller representations and clarifiers. Ikos for that which could be altered, chance and luck, Bhun for the tranquility of an unmangled body, Chanu for extended life, Genas for vitality, Dharv for the possesor of the ring, Salucha for the enemies hostility going unfufilled. The runes swirled around each other, their colours and shapes, the directions of the brush strokes and the interaction between outline and colour blending to give meaning to the sigil. She worked into the darkening to give the sigil form, and meditate upon both it and the ring held tightly in her grasp.

The magic was willed into the ring by her own thoughts, and before she went to sleep she cast the entire sigil into a fire and placed the ring within an envelope. When the twenty sixth came around she would be standing on the same street where the boy found her, envelope in hand.

Danerec rushed to the street where he had met Carly early, as the trip was supposed to have started already. There was no way he was going to leave without this ring, however, if it could do him any good in the events to come. He stalled as long as he could, pacing to and fro in the performer's tent that he called home, before he could stand the tension of waiting no longer.

I'll explain it to the others as sleeping in, Danerec thought as he found himself pacing back and forth on the walk. I do hope she hurries though, I don't know if they'd leave without me. How long would they really wait?

Carly had been standing in the one spot for one time, she was growing steadily more bored with the waiting, the boy had either been stabbed to death or was incapable of keeping an appointment. So much time passed that she grew hungry and began to look for food, when she turned a corner she found Danerec there pacing the side of the street. She growled under her breath, but rather then berating him she walked straight up to him, envelope in hand, and punched it into his hand. "There you go, next time try asking for a sense of direction."

Danerec was surprised when Carly rounded a corner and hastily gave him an envelope with his ring in it. When she mentioned asking for a sense of direction he couldn't help suppressing a grin. It was only his fourth month in the city. The fact that he could get to the same ballpark as where he wanted to be was still pretty good for him. And the fact that Carly had blessed the ring for him was a definite boost to his spirits.

"Thanks! I'll be sure to ask for some next time," he replied, not noticing that his comment further insulted himself. "Tell the world about you, right? That was the price?" He said as he turned to walk away. "If I live, I'll have all the bards singing of you!"

She huffed again at the 'humans' stupidity, could he really be so daft? The question crossed her mind as to how did ever survived as a species. She gave a prompt nod, he could at least remember the condition placed upon the ring.

"That's right, bards singing my name and what not. Go do your adventuring thing now or the ring won't seem so famous."

With that she turned on her heel and stalked off to fill her belly again, then back to the office to send some letters or something.

+ 1 Ikos for Carly. Danerec gets a ring that will let him dodge a single blow from a weapon at a critical point in a battle at a Moderators discretion (its up to Dan to let them know he has this item... I will add it to his SoF). It will work only twice before its no longer 'blessed'.
