Mound Worshippers [Open]
First Cycle of Aperitus, Summer, Era XIV PF
Pushing his goggles up on his head Mineal looked around at the strange, nature made square. This was the nicest climate Mineal had ever been in, not at all like the extreme hot and cold temperatures of the wastes or the bitter, wet cold weather of Frigid River. It was comfortable, and yet all together strange and foreign to the mosat. He had never lived in a place where the climate could be described as nice. Just one more strange bullet in the list of Acumin's oddities.
He was now investigating one of the more strange places of the village. It was a fountain of sorts, or a spring more precisely. Mineal had followed one of the small streams to the source. There were a few people bent down on their knees praying. Very strange to see people praying to water. He hunkered down over one of the small streams and looked down at the water. Such a weird place, magic shields, trees turning themselves into buildings, and worshiping a water spring. N'danosh had been a culture shock but Acumin was just odd to the mosat, a village of some freak accident of nature.

Like a proper Allerian, Mr. McGrath had been doing his daily share of aimless wandering through his new home town, and it was during this very casual walk that he had spotted something. Something that was alive and well, and perhaps not unusual in these parts of the Empire, but still something that he wasn't particularly familiar with: a rodenti. He found it scurrying along one of the rivelets that, he had found out recently, led towards the temple of that silly Carmelya and her troop of botanic followers. Seemed to be a lot of them here in Acumin, for some reason. Likely something to do with the colour green, which was so overabudant in this town.
He approached the little critter as it was apparently inspecting its own reflection in the water, and stared blatantly while silently hoping that the fellow would look up and give him a proper look. Perhaps it would even speak, imagine that! A giant rat pretending to be all human and sorts, walking on its hind legs and gripping things with the others. And talking, its beady eyes looking around and nose twitching. Surely it would help to improve Mr. McGrath spirits, which had been sinking quite severely ever since he truly realised what kind of place he had walked into that brightening he passed the invisible bubble.

The little ball of cloth topped with a hat stood up when he noticed someone had stopped and was staring at him. Mineal stood up and turned to face the human. From afar it looked like an odd showdown of sorts as the two stood apart facing each other. Mineal looked at the human from beneath the low brim of his conical hat. Garbed in tan and creme colored poncho he stared back at the human, pink nose at the end of his tan muzzle twitching slightly. Perhaps the man had come to pray to the bubbling mound of earth like the others but had been distracted by his presence. It was not everyday one found a rodenti standing around in the middle of a village square. Xenophobic by nature most rodenti were at home more in their underground burrows among their own kind than out walking about all of Telath.
Certainly being gawked at was not a natural phenomenon but sadly Mineal was becoming used to it. He had gotten the same looks of interest or disgust everywhere he traveled. It seemed many people in the western part of the empire were not used to seeing rodenti in any form. Still he did not say anything but with a plain expression stared back at the man.

Standing there, looking intently at the rodenti, Mr. McGrath never even noticed the smile that was slowly forming on his face as Mineal turned to face him. He did notice, however, when the smile turned into a smirk and then, slowly, he started to snicker. His hand was brought to his mouth in a reflex, but apparently couldn't control himself as he blurted out "It's wearing a little hat! Just like a little hairy human!"
A look of incredulity on his weathered face, Shampoo slapped his knee without further thought as his other hand pointed at the ratta. "And goggles too! How cute! My daughter would have loved one of those, I swear to the Gods (silly as they are)! Do you talk as well? Please say that you do!" A tear appeared and slowly rolled down Mr. McGrath's cheek, preparing for the great plunge.
He looked around, looking for others to join the fun. After all, he couldn't be the only one noticing the smartly-dressed rodenti, could he?

While Mineal waited on the man to either say something or move on he began to laugh. The mosat found that a strange reaction but his blandly stoic face watched on. Still he did not exactly like being referred to as an it. But when Mineal saw a tear develop and roll down the man's cheek pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place.
"Yes, we can speak. You cry when you laugh, that is strange. You have come to pray to the dirt mound for it to cure your idiocy?" It was not an angry accusation, Mineal had never seen someone cry and laugh at the same time. He simply assumed that the man was brain addled.

The redheaded acuminian had just gotten off of her watch and looked at the two standing the sqaure before the area sacred to Carmelya. Her red hair was still tied back in a braid to keep it out of her eyes when she had been on duty. She could see the two stairing at each other and had paused to figure out what was going on. It wasn't everyday that one saw a Roenti in a top hat and googles. Her red lips turned up into a smile as she contiuned to watch. When the pointing happened though she shock her head. This was silly.
"Serale gentleman." She said interuppting before things could become violent. Her braid bounced along her back as she moved gracefully towards them her lips upturned into a friendly smile.

"What there's two of you now?" Muttered Mr. McGrath, holding his belly with his hands as he laughed out loud. He looked around briefly, but his gaze returned to the goggled rodenti as the little critter spoke of praying and idiocy. His pride was stung slightly, but soon he realised that the ratta's brain was probably not big enough to understand these things. There was a reason the Gods had decided to have them live underground for most of the brightening, after all.
Pity kicked in. "I see... you have no idea where you are, do you?" He asked, partly concerned but still mostly amused. He was about to ask where the ratta had come from when someone rudely interrupted the conversation. A look to the side showed that ignorance had decided to send in the cavalry. Shampoo sighed deeply. Why did he always attract people who were concerned with others? Perhaps some brightening he would be lucky enough to find a repellent.
"Serale little lass," he began, his mind already trying to find a way to get rid of her. Mr. McGrath wasn't a people person, he was more of a no-people-at-all person, and this was extremely evident in his social behaviour since it was, in fact, not social at all. "Shouldn't you be in school?" he finally decided. "Or did you skip school to come looking for your hairy friend of sorts?" The pleasant mood, it seemed, had left the scene in a hurry and was replaced by the more common disinterest that considered itself Mr. McGrath's closest friend.

Two? No there were hundreds of rodenti, thousands most likely though it was hard to find many of the xenophobic races. The man's expression changed and his words were softer towards the mosat. Of course Mineal knew where he was, he was in Acumin on his way to Sheria and standing next to a bunch of strange people worshiping a mound of dirt that a spring flowed out of. However Mineal had no chance to interject as a girl with red hair approached them.
Obviously the man was talking about Mineal though the term furry would have been a better description. He turned his attention back to the man. "I do not know her."

Philyra knew a challange when she saw one. Either the man was normally rude, to just tactless. Either way the red head could play as well. She walked towards the man and stopping a few feet away. "I apologies for not being more respectful to my elders." she gave a tilt of her head. "Would you like me to fetch your spectical since appreantly your blind with out them, grandpa." She tilted her head the other way with a visous smile. "Or would you like me to fetch you a chair since at your advanced age you must be tired from all this moveing and standing, and I mean that cackling it must have worn you out." She then turned towards the rodenti
"Serale it is a pleasure to meet yourself. I haven't ever been privalaged with meeting one of you races. My name is Philyra." Her smile towards the rodenti was sincer and her lips were truely turned up in that smile.

There was a difference between being rude and being outright disrespectful and Mr McGrath was well aware of this difference when Philyra replied. Apparently he'd hit a sensitive spot, judging from the remark the girl made. He wasn't impressed though, and coudn't surpress a grin as he replied. "Wow," he said, nodding slowly and quasi-amazed. "Your parents must have really hated you. I bet you hold some kind of enormous grudge against society. No wonder you moved to this place. No offense of course." Some kind of "old men's" wink followed, with Philyra to decide whether it was sincere.
He then turned to the rodenti again, considering his conversation with Phylira concluded for now. He didn't rule out that they continue later on, and there would be enough bitter ammunition waiting for her, but for now it was time for something else (as mentioned, Shampoo had had ample experience with arguing and bickering with women. Half a lifetime of marriage had prepared him for the absolute worst). "I thought you fellows lived under the ground? Digging tunnels and all that?" A questioning look had formed on his face.

Mineal looked at the halfie and nodded. "Serale." Why the two were bickering he could not fathom. It was obvious that the two did not know each other. Perhaps they simply did not like people unlike themselves. The man had been rude to both Mineal and Philyra, maybe he was bored.
He nodded to the human and looked around at Acumin. "Most do and the humans I have seen live in houses, not trees." It was an odd observation but one suited to the conversation.

Philyra was amazed at the guy standing next to her, he was, different, and lacked social skills apparently. She didn't even acknowledge that with a shrug though. To do so would stoop to his level, and that was the last thing she really wanted to.
Philyra smiled. "Acumin is unique. Thanks to Carmeyla and her blessings, we have moved from normal human housing and have moved into these more enchanged houseing." She looked cuirously at him. "So were are you from originally?"

Mineal turned his attention to the female. He had been speaking to the older man but obviously the woman had take it upon herself to fill him in. Carmelya's thanks, and odd thing the rodenti thought. Why would someone thank that goddess for letting them live in trees like birds and squirrels? Somethings were just beyond Mineal's comprehension, he liked more simple things.
He blinked at Philyra for a moment then turned and pointed towards the west with a tan-furred finger ended with a claw. "The edge of the empire and beyond." The mosat had spent much of his time skirting the border of the empire and cutting paths through the wastelands. Then he had ventured forth into the infant citystates of N'Danosh. A place the mosat would sooner forget about than return.

Mr. McGrath's eyes widened as the rodenti mentioned he'd travelled not only to the edge of the Empire, but beyond as well. And here he was thinking he'd be the only one with grand tales of alien cultures and their insane rituals. "Lightning strike me, you little ball of fur," this time the words were almost friendly, "if you're telling me you've been to that ghastly place out in the West too. Did Khalid take you there as well? Great fellow that, knows his kebab like no other." He shook his head as memories returned.
Suddenly realising that he'd interrupted the conversation that was about to sprout between the mosat (which the fellow probably was) and the girl (whom he hadn't quite figured out yet save for the part about her terrible youth), Mr. McGrath fell silent. He'd have to ask the rodenti at a later point whether he'd ventured as far as the trilands. Perhaps he'd even witnessed the heads of the Sand Pirates roll down the Great Ziqqurrat that one crazy brightening in that insanely warm and sandy place. Acumin would be great compared to that hell hole.
Not saying anything just yet, Shampoo looked rather droll just standing and watching - his gaze going from one to the other.
