Acumin Aedile's Office

One of the larger buildings in all of Acumin, the Aediles office stands two stories tall. A wooden picture of a house inhabits the sign hangs above the doorway provided by separated vines and plantlife. White and scentless flowers growing from the building follow the entrance way and trail along the building in a decorative manner. There are a few glassless windows along the building to let natural light inside.

Entering, you see a fairly plain place, chairs line the walls and culminate at a desk. There a very sharp looking elf sits, seemingly sorting papers in a quite mundane way. He has a very young look to him however his aura seems completely business oriented. A sign suspended above the desk by vines reads "Office of Latherin Veridos. Aedile of Acumin." As you approach the man looks up and greets you not even looking up from his work in a fairly cold and uninterested manor.

"Welcome to the Aediles office, how may I be of service to you?"

You also notice a piece of parchment attached to the desk, it reads:

"Assisstant Aedile needed. Inquire within for details."

Aernyth knew that he shouldnt keep Cristof waiting too long, short and sweet was on his mind. Walking into the Aedile's Office with a friendly smile on his face and speaking with confidence.

"Serale Latherin, I am Aernyth. I was more thinking I could be of much more service too you. Cristof and has informed me that you need an assistant here. I would be more than glad too assist if given the chance."

Aernyth still smiling, pulls out his Imperial Visa, and slides it over too the Aedile.

Latherin looked up at Aerynth, upon his reply and smiled. He had really not expected to see anyone he didn't already know, as newcomers were now a rarity in the town.

"Well...Serale. I'm sorry for my distance, I didn't know we had a new arrival. You must be referring to the assistant Aedile position. It was kind of Cristof to mention it. Will you be in Acumin long, though? It's not exactly a tourist spot, especially now...."

The man trailed off, thinking of what to ask. He had not been Aedile long, but he knew the job.

"Well, how are your math skills? That's about all that's needed, since I can teach you everything else. You just have to make sure you stick around to do the job, we've had a few people just skip town after they find out there's no overflowing wealth."

Latherin laughed a little and sat, awaiting the Katta's reply.

Aerynth smiled, and thought briefly. He didnt want too lie too Latherin, and knew his math skills were not exactly the best. Kinda nervously he spoke.

" Unfortunatly my math isnt exactly good. I am at least what I would consider average in math, but not great by no means. I can count money very well though. I am also a very quick learner, and a hard worker. "

Shuffling his hands a bit Aerynth was apparently ashamed of his lack of ability in math. But he still smiled, him hoping that average was good enough. Speaking softer than before

" I am no tourist. I am here too help rebuild Acumin. And I do intend too stay for quite some time. "

Still shuffling his hands a bit, Aerynths smile fades as he waits for the reply of Latherin.

The Aedile smiled at the Katta's reply, shuffling some papers into neat stacks upon his desk. He considered for a moment, then nodded, speaking.

"Sure. I can use you, when can you start? The pay will be one-hundred forty crowns per cycle. That should be more than enough to make your way in Acumin. We have a barter system starting to emerge here."

The Aedile looked at the Katta, awaiting a reply.

Aerynth smiled at Latherin, and then spoke happily.

"I can start the next brightening. Thankyou very much, you wont be disapointed."

Aerynth knew he had too meet back with Cristof, but he had one more stop too go too before he could. Aerynth headed out of the door.

Second Cycle in Imperos
During the season of Summer

Aydyn had been set to head immediately for the local inn before her eyes caught sight of the Aedile's Office nestled among a variety of different flowers and vines weaving along door frames and windows. One thing Aydyn had remarked upon here in Acumin was how much of it seemed to melt right into the landscape! It was so very different from Demios, all of which was contrived, the wood taken from the forests to increase the girth of the steadily growing town. It was a refreshing change.

Aydyn tied her horse up just outside of the building, leaving Adagio to graze if there happened to be any grass just outside, and made her way into the Aedile's. She knew she would need a job if she planned to stay here and this seemed as good a place as any. After all, she had held the position of Assistant Aedile from the end of Melora until the time she left at the tail end of Ioannes. A little more than three months on the job and Aydyn felt sure that she had learned enough to help out yet another Aedile in another town.

She approached the elf casually, being in no hurry and rather worn and dusty from her travels. She supposed she probably should have washed up before coming here, but the harm was done and she still figured she looked pleasant enough. Her hopes of attaining a job here lifted as she noticed the sign attached to his desk.

"Ah, serale," she greeted him nervously when he did not look up from his work. Much, much different from Rosamund, who had been out-going and cheerful and absolutely wonderful to work with. "You are in need of an Assistant? At least...I mean...that's what your sign says." His chilly demeanor had caused Aydyn to lapse into some discomfort. She shifted from one foot to another and cleared her throat. "I used to work as the Assistant Aedile in Demios. For three whole months," she added quickly. "I have plenty of experience, I assure you. I even helped plan one of the bigger festivals while I was there." She clamped her mouth shut to cease her rambling. Blessed Carmelya, let's hope I don't mess this up!

ooc: I'm going to assume that the job offer is still available

[ooc: Lichen's descriptions of Latherin in IC threads is different from Loudmouth's post here, and I have gone with her more recent version of reality. In this version, he is human, and a bit different from what is described. Sorry if that's confusing. Think of him as a sort of Aedile Who. I'll update the writeup.]

Acumin was a place of lush vegetation, of broad green pastures and fertile farmland now abandoned. Adagio would not want for grass, wherever in the village she might care to forage for it. There was plenty just outside the Aedile’s office, and Aydyn was able to leave her plainsbred mare grazing contendedly nearby as she entered the large, vaulting trellis of plants and vines that was the Acumin Aedile’s Office.

The Aedile lifted his head at Aydyn’s greeting, revealing a tired, careworn, and somewhat prematurely aged face. ”Serale, young lady,” he said quietly, “I am sorry, but I did not hear you come in.” He attempted what was probably supposed to be a friendly smile, but he was obviously out of practice. ”I am Latherin Veridos, the Aedile and only surviving city official of Acumin.” A slightly bitter tone crept into his voice as he spoke the word ‘surviving’. Nonetheless, Latherin’s demeanor was not so much chilly as it was weary and preoccupied. He listened politely enough to Aydyn’s explanation of her interest in the Assistant’s job, and even showed some interest when she explained her experience. It wasn’t as if she had a lot of competition for the job at this point.

Latherin seemed to recover a bit of his manners and hospitality at this point, as he invited his visitor to sit and asked if she wanted or needed anything. He attended to his duties as a host the same way he attended to all of his duties: thoroughly and attentively, but without much apparent enthusiasm. Once he had tended to Aydyn’s comfort as best he could, he sat back down at his desk and leaned towards the eager young newcomer. ”Aydyn, first let me say it’s refreshing to have a new face around here, especially one who wants to contribute. Acumin needs more people like that. About the job: I have good news and bad news. The good news is that, yes, the job for Assistant Aedile is unoccupied, and even though there are few people currently living here, there is actually quite a bit of work you could help me with.”

He paused a bit uneasily before continuing. ”Eh, the bad news concerns money. We basically have no revenue right now, and hence your pay prospects would be sketchy. The job originally posted at 150 Crowns per cycle. Quite bluntly, I would be doing well right now to pay you that much in a month. Now, your costs would be practically nil; I can easily arrange for your room and board, many of our resources are common property, and you can barter for or simply borrow many of the goods you might otherwise have to buy in a large town. But you wouldn’t have many Crowns to spend.”

Latherin stopped here to see how what he had just said sat with Aydyn before letting out a brief, tired sigh and then continuing. ”That being said, there is a chance you could eventually end up making as much money as you wish, if all goes well.” He gazed seriously at Aydyn. ”But it will require your being something of a salesman, and your getting well-paid would depend upon your success as such. I don’t know if that is what you would expect from an Assistant Aedile’s job, though. Would you like me to tell you more, young Aydyn?”

Aydyn visibly relaxed as Latherin's polite expression washed into interest and then into the concern of making her comfortable. He was not as comforting as Rosamund's warm receptiveness and easily acceptable personality, but he was not as off-putting as he had initially seemed. She declined his offer for anything, although she quietly ached for a nice bath that would relieve the aches and pains she had acquired since purchasing Adagio. She was gradually growing accustomed to riding and knew it would take time for that to eventually fade away, but she really wished that the aches would disappear. Soon.

She shifted about in her chair as he leaned forward to discuss the position she had approached him about. The acknowledgment that there was both good news and bad news made a small, hesitant frown place itself on Aydyn's lips. Maybe there was a different position open. Or...something of the sort. She sat quietly and attentively, trying not to appear anxious and probably failing miserably. Aydyn had never been good at deception. Hearing the old pay rate of the assistant aedile, Aydyn's jaw dropped. One hundred and fifty? That was nearly a whole hundred crowns more than her last job! Well, that payroll wouldn't be missed, even if it would have been nice to have the extra income.

Aydyn did not appear visibly phased by the announcement that money would be an issue where a job was concerned. "Money is not a huge concern to me at the moment," she admitted carefully, tilting her head slightly. The ponytail of brown hair shifted over the nape of her neck. "As long as I can feed myself and my animals, then it's nothing that I'll be worried about." She smiled reassuring. "I'd appreciate a room, though. I was actually going to see what you had available... I just need a place where no one will mind the presence of alicats." She hesitated again. She was not used to having to tend to the needs and requirements of a horse. "And if it would have a little area I could keep my horse in?" She frowned slightly, wondering if that was asking for too much. "I'm otherwise really not much of a bother," she blurted quickly.

"But, yes, I am still interested. Please, go on," she urged, quite unsure of all this talk about being a good businesswoman and what not. She had plenty of experience where houses and properties were concerned, but otherwise... Well, she'd just have to see what he had in mind.

Latherin was clearly relieved and pleased to hear that Aydyn was not overly concerned about the money, and that her requirements were fairly modest. There was something else he finally seemed to notice as well, while Aydyn spoke. When she tilted her head a certain way, and the Aedile noticed how the young woman’s ponytail slid across the back of her neck, it suddenly struck her that she was, in fact, a young woman, and a pretty one at that. She was certainly a welcome addition to the sights of Acumin, whatever she did as Assistant Aedile. He noticed that she had not mentioned anything about children or a husband. And the thought that she had come straight to him first of all, that the prettiest woman in the village would be working in his office, pleased him more than he expected, or was willing to admit to himself. He caught himself absently watching her ponytail swing back and forth and realized that she had finished speaking, and that he had not been paying attention as he should have to what she was saying.

”In-interested?” Latherin stammered, momentarily flustered. To his dismay, he could feel a warm sensation spread into his cheeks and ears. ”Well, that’s great. Great. Umm…I’m glad to hear it.” He closed his eyes for a moment, leaned back in his chair, and exhaled slowly. The gesture was supposed to look thoughtful and slightly weary, and in this Latherin Veridos succeeded, largely because he really was rather weary and preoccupied. In this case, however, he was really stalling for time, as he had momentarily forgotten what he was supposed to ‘please go on’ about. When he opened his eyes again, he seemed composed and businesslike again.

”Your animals will not be a bother here,” the man reassured Aydyn, ”although I would suggest you get collars or something for your alicats, so that the other villagers can see that they are somebody’s pets and not just easy food for them.” Aydyn could not really tell if he was trying to be funny in saying this, or if he was really serious. ”With less than forty people living where more than a thousand used to be, space is not an issue; you can pretty much have your pick. In fact, one of your first tasks as Assistant Aedile would be to help me identify which land around here is unclaimed and which has pending claims upon it, which land is still useful and which is not. So one of your perks as Assistant Aedile would be that you could pick just about any place you liked for yourself. Within reason, of course.” Latherin watched Aydyn’s reaction to this carefully, possibly hoping that such a perquisite would make up for her rather meager short-term prospects for Crowns.

”Now, as to what I mentioned earlier about the possibility of making some money for yourself,” he continued, his manner suddenly turning quite intent: ”As you no doubt can see, Acumin needs people to rebuild its economy. And not just any sort of people doing any sort of trade, either: You see, Aydyn, we are under Carmelya’s protection; it was She, and not anything we mortals did, that saved us on the night of the Cleansing. And that salvation has come at a price, one you can learn more details about at the Fountain in the middle of our town. I recommend you talk to the Druids there, and ask about the Promise, for the details of our pact with Carmelya lay down some rather stringent ground rules for what our villagers can and cannot do for their livelihood.

“What you need to know for now is that we wish to identify the best pasturelands around here, the best stands of maple trees, the most suitable places for planting additional trees, especially apples and pears. Once we know where those are, we need to parcel out the unsettled land and try to sell it to farmers who are willing to make their living mainly in shepherding, maple sugar production, beekeeping, fruit-farming…It is best you go to the fountain and read the details of the Promise in the book the druids keep there; it will help you understand.”
He watched the young woman carefully to make sure he was not confusing her too much.

He now got to the point he was most concerned about: ”We need to be active, even a bit aggressive, in finding and recruiting suitable farmers and workers from the neighboring towns to come here. It means going to Midpoint and talking to shepherds, and trying to entice them to come and bring their livestock here. It means appealing to Naturans for help establishing a population of beekeepers and apple-tree-farmers. It means going to Primus Gaudeo and Riparia to recruit hands for sugar-boiling, and for sheep-shearing.

“I am going to offer the land quite cheap. Dirt-cheap, you might say.”
The Aedile smiled upon saying this, and looked hopefully at Aydyn for a laugh or at least a smile, as this was the closest he had come to making a witty comment in some time. When the laughter and applause finally subsided, he grew serious again and continued: ”Land sales will have to serve as Acumin’s main source of revenue until we are able to re-establish an economy and a tax base. If we manage to sell enough land, I should be able to pay you a reasonable salary until our finances start to resemble those of a town again. In fact, I would not mind offering you a commission on the lands you manage to sell to suitable farmers.” Latherin leaned forward and smiled his most charming and gracious smile as he said this last, obviously hoping that Aydyn would find his offer attractive. ”So what do you say, Aydyn?”

Aydyn Blair is a benevolent Adventurer
Aydyn's reached several conclusions of the Aedile as he stammered through his surprise that she seemed all right with the restrictions of the job. He wanted very much to be very professional and...composed. There seemed little room for breaks through the facade he wanted to present to others. Aydyn had seen these types of people before and was not particularly fond of adopting the attitude herself, but...to each their own. If she suspected his brief stammer and flush were due to anything other than surprise at her acceptance of the job's little drawbacks, she did not give way to knowing. Aydyn was clueless and usually took things at face value.

Which was why Aydyn blanched at the suggestion that she keep her alicats collared at all times since locals might mistake them for food. "They...they have collars already," she spluttered, really not quite sure how to approach that dilemma. Well, they certainly weren't going to be permitted very far beyond the perimeters of wherever she ended up living. He really wouldn't have had to add "within reason" if he knew Aydyn. Something modest with just enough space for her to sleep and live...she wasn't picky. She didn't need those grand houses people were so often enamored with. As long as it wasn't another inn...

As for scouting the land and figuring out which places were livable and without tenants, that didn't seem like a very difficult task. Of course, there was never telling what obstacles the locals would put in her way. They were a very small town, after all, and small town people were often very stubborn towards outsiders. She would know...her farming community had not been particularly big either. She could understand their need to rebuild, too. Income was very important to everyone and with her father being successful in his sales she knew he did not go to the small communities to sell his products. He went to Candaceburg where there were more people to make a profit off of. She could definitely understand the problems these people were facing, if not at the scale at which they suffered. She did not, after all, know anything about Carmelya's act to protect them from whatever fate they had previously suffered. It seemed odd that the people were restricted. But perhaps it made sense. Carmelya would not allow for the destruction of nature and that explained the very wild atmosphere of the town.

She smiled, looking not at all swayed with the tasks other people might find daunting. Talking to the druids would be no problem, seeing as she had planned to do this anyway. If anything, it just gave her another reason to find them out. The number of things she and the Aedile were to be responsible were growing, however. She would have to make a list of them so that she would not forget. She did not want to disappoint him after all. Failure was not an option, even though this would be so much to put on her shoulders. Was she ready for the responsibility? Well, she had wanted to prove to her family that she was a success. Why not try to make that success apparent where success was most needed? "I'll have to write that all down," she confessed after a moment, hoping she did not look very embarrassed. "It's a lot to remember and I wouldn't want to forget any of it."

His next explanation about hunting down people to work these tasks was also reasonable, things that made sense to Aydyn. She was a person who understood reason and people could not expect to start herding sheep without shepherds and sheep...much less plan any sort of sugar or fruit farming without the workers or the trees. She nodded thoughtfully as he explained that the land was going cheaply. What better way to attract people? She didn't need to spend too long in an Aedile's office to understand that people went for what was cheapest. She had learned that growing up on a farm and around other farmers. Their livelihood was often--not always--lucrative, but expensive, and they would take breaks where they could find them. "I say that you have a lot of plans for your little town. I'd be glad to help you out."

Latherin gave Aydyn a smile that looked relieved more than anything else, as if she'd just bought him a cold drink on a very hot, difficult day. "Outstanding," he said. He stopped smiling momentarily and his brow furrowed as if he were suddenly trying to remember something, and started to rummage about in his desk. "Hold on a moment, please." His head disappeared behind the desk for a moment, and the young woman could hear the Aedile grunt and mutter a bit as an assortment of unseen objects whose nature Aydyn could only guess at rumbled and rattled around inside the desk. This went on for a moment before there came a distinctive metallic jingle, accompanied by Latherin's voice exclaming "Ah, aha! Yes, here."

Latherin's head reappeared, his hair slightly disheveled, and with it appearead a small cloth bag with what appeared to be some coins in it. While Aydyn watched, the Aedile opened the bag and counted the Crowns inside it. There were sixty-eight, which he stacked into piles of ten. He gave the odd remainder pile a briefly annoyed look, as if it offended his sense of symmetry and proportion, but then he pushed them to the far end of the desk, towards Aydyn. "I can give you these for now, Aydyn. And we should also pick out a house for you. What I would recommend is that you stay at the Sooty Cavern Tavern and Inn for a few days -don't worry, I'll arrange things with Mila so that your room and meals are covered for as long as it takes-, and take your time picking out a lot. Then we can make arrangements for the Druids to grow your house for you.

"Besides, hanging about the Sooty Cavern will give you a chance to meet the locals and catch up on news and such, and give people a chance to get to know you. It is good to have you aboard, Aydyn."
Latherin leaned forward and offered his hand to the young woman. "You may start as soon as you like- well, not right this moment, but first thing in the morning. Or if you prefer, you may take a couple brightenings to explore the town and get comfortable before starting." He ventured a smile that managed to look friendly, in spite of his apparent weariness. "I want to get these plans moving, but urgency is currently a matter of brightenings and cycles around here, not candlemarks." He thought of one last thing before ending the interview: "We will also need to work on finding you a desk, and that may be a bit of a challenge. But we'll work on it. Do you have any questions, Aydyn?"

ooc: You are now Assistant Aedile of Acumin. You may assume that you will not have any trouble getting a house, and you may write your own house post. Just remember that the buildings here are all grown from living vegetation rather than built from wood or stone. When you're ready to start your training and work, start another thread and we'll take it from there. Welcome to Acumin

Aydyn Blair is a benevolent Adventurer
Aydyn took Latherin's disappearance behind his desk as an opportunity to briefly close her eyes and push a soundless wisp of air--relief--between a small gap formed by her lips. Once again she managed to find a job with little trouble thanks to the help of an Aedile. It was the continued open kindness of the Aediles she encountered that made Aydyn feel quite at ease with the notion that she was engaging in a profession she could actually enjoy. Granted, she didn't think she would ever attempt to become anything but an assistant, but time would tell.

The continued clatter and jingle of objects within the desk dragged Aydyn to her full attention. She leaned forward, peering curiously after the vanished Aedile and trying to figure out what exactly he was looking for. One thing Aydyn took note of was that Aedile's were usually quite addled. At least, their desks were usually a mess and they were looking for things at every turn. Aydyn always hoped to add some clarity and order to their surroundings. She hated digging through piles in search of things...

Visions of organization were ripped away as the Aedile poked his head back up and produced a small bag that jingled audibly with coin. An amused smile twitched over the corners of her lips, which she vaguely attempted to hide as she scratched at the bridge of her nose. The smile dissipated as she watched the Aedile pour out the contents, count them out, and push them across the table towards her. She hadn't even started working yet! Her mouth opened and closed, as if she would protest the exchange, but she snapped her mouth shut and nodded gratefully towards the Aedile. He was being very helpful in getting her established here in the town and she couldn't very well override his kindness. Carefully she picked the coins up and placed them into her knapsack. "Thank you, I'll head over to the tavern from here." A silly statement, she realized with a slight flush to her cheeks. Where else would she go, after all? She was new to the area and, as of the moment, did not have any other shelter to retreat to.

Aydyn extended her hand towards Latherin, shook the appendage he offered to her, and smiled warmly. "I suppose it would be nice if I could start in two brightenings? I've been traveling for a little more than a cycle and I suppose a little rest would be good." She felt odd asking for a delay in her work considering she had come to him looking for a job. But she was saddle-sore and looked forward to her first real bed in almost six brightenings. "It would be nice to take a look around town." She dropped her hand back in her lap. It rested there for a moment as she considered his closing question. Her hand rose to brush back the hair from her face as she considered it. "No. No, I don't think I have any questions right now." Her head tilted slightly as a rueful smile slid over her face. "That might change, though, once I get a look around."

She stood then, adjusting the fit of her knapsack over her shoulder and again swiping at her hair as the few lose strands from her ponytail tickled over her freckled nose. "I'll come back the day after tomorrow and start work, then. Thanks so much, I really appreciate everything." Unless the Aedile had anything else to add, Aydyn would smile and nod her thanks once more to Latherin and head on out of the office to where her horse awaited her.

Desmodus is an upstanding Citizen
The Aedile seemed pleased and relieved at Aydyn's response. At very least, she hadn't turned up her nose at the meager advance he had offered her. "Two brightenings? Of course, no problem," he said in response to her offer. "A little rest would be good after your journey." He gave a tired little smile and his eyes drifted slowly downward and away, seeming to look at where the hooves of Aydyn's horse might have been were he able to see them outside. He muttered something else quietly, in an almost whistful sounding tone: "Yes, rest is good."

Latherin remained in that somewhat abstracted attitude throughout the rest of their interview, and the young woman could have been forgiven for wondering if he were listening at all. But as she was making to leave, his eyes turned up to meet hers, and he gave her a reasonably pleasant smile: "You are certainly welcome, Miss Aydyn. I look forward to seeing you again -and working with you." The last phrase sounded almost as if it were an afterthought.

As Aydyn left the Aedile's office, Latherin's tired eyes gazed somewhat absent-mindedly at her swinging ponytail.

Aeolwyn Hy`lannad is an upstanding Citizen
Aeolwyn passed beneath gilded vine and whirling amber, flame, and earth. The colors of autumn scarcely escaped him, drawing the young farm hand into a botanical wonderland of orange. When the doors to the aedile revealed themselves he slipped past the quiet threshold, a baijani bewildered by the dramatic fluctuations of Acuminion life. This place was a bit of a hotbed for disaster, but he just needed a little work, and promised himself he'd not foolishly test the hand of the Dolwood. It was off to Midpoint once he made some good crown. Though - there was something else, but he'd get to it later; the matter of a bow, and learning to fetch his own food. The foraging was still good, what with autumn on the wane, but he'd be in winter before making it back home to Jaedaxia.
Thirty seconds of thought. Too much; enough to be caught day-dreaming. He snickered at himself, and realized too many brightenings on the road alone had provoked the young man to live in his head a little. Fair enough. Good times happening there, on a whim.
He tipped his head before the registrar, casting a respectful glance and polite smile. Rumors of gruff 'northman' ways were a little exaggerated, more to be expected from Vhagrand, plus he'd more been tailored to a Jaedaxianne lifestyle. What would they think, could they see the wretched city now? He sighed and offered, "Serale, I'm Aeolwyn, traveling from New Coldmoon, on my way to Tirisfal, following the harvest trails. I'm wondering if there aren't any farmers looking for last minute laborers? I'll be in for nigh three cycles and could use the coin." He paused, gauging the official for some reassurance, just enough to make sure he was in the right place.
