Lauke is an upstanding Citizen
Rose Lauke's House (All welcome)

In the heart of the domicilium of Abestat, between the ramshackle shacks of the poor and the richly built homes of the well-to-do, lay an ordinary, humble-looking house. It was a simple home, made of wood, with a roof that had a better than 50-50 chance of leaking should rain come. Letters were smeared onto the door with a material that looked like brown paint, but had the texture of dried mud. It read, "Lauke's House."

Inside, it was apparent that the house was comprised solely of one room. There were no other doors or walkways. The room possessed a few pieces of poorly made furniture, all likely to break the next time sufficient weight was placed upon them. A very small cupboard held a small amount of food, no water.

About this time, as morning came to this side of Telath, a yawn came from the back right of the house. An average figure stirred on a very simple bed, stretching and removing the fatigue from its muscles. At length, it sat up and pulled away the basic bedsheet, rubbing its eyes.

After a few seconds, the hand came down and the face was revealed. It was the face of a young, human man, with brown hair, brown eyes, and the startings of a grin on his face. After a quick exhale, the grin became a full-fledged smile and his entire face lit up. "Another wonderful brightening!" he exclaimed to no one in particular. With this declaration, he abruptly left the bed to start the day.

As he donned his pantaloons, sleeveless tunic, and shoes, he hummed the melody to a song about an adventurer, who reputedly jumped nude into the Ioannes River to cool off and came out to find a band of goblins at his campsite. At the sight of him, the goblins actually knelt, paid him homage, and brought him to their tribe. Bringing him to their altar, he saw that the image they prayed and gave sacrifices to was an exact replica of his... genitalia. Accordingly, he assumed the role of an avatar of their imaginary god and lived a life of luxury to the end of his days.

Why did Lauke hum this song? Because the lyrics were rather rude and he'd already been fined once for disturbing the peace.

Having finished dressing and humming, Lauke walked to the middle of the house and stopped suddenly. "Something doesn't feel right..." he murmured, glancing around with a worried look on his face. His eyes fell on a scrap of cloth on the table, and he smiled once again. "My bandanna!" he cried, crossing the room to grab it and put it on his head. His bandanna was very important to him, as it was the last thing his mother gave him before she died. She claimed that it had belonged to one of their ancestors, who had fought under Emperor Constantine as he conquered Luctadomum.

Lauke didn't know one way or the other about that, but the bandanna felt right and looked pretty good on him.

Tying the last knot behind his head, his arms fell to his sides and he took in a deep breath, exhaling slowly. Another day in the Allerian Empire... A knocking at the door brought him back from his daydream. Walking to the door with a smile on his face, he opened it and faced his visitor. "Serale! I am Lauke. How are you this fine brightening?"

“Serale, maybe sir you could help me.” Cyy’cil asked. “Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Cyy’cil Spellcore.”, the young man said. “You see, I’ve just come to Abestat myself. If you would be so kind as to lend me a place to sleep at night.” looking at Lauke with great hope. “Then I would gladly tend to daily chores for you. I’m afraid I don’t much else to offer you.”

Cyy’cil hoped his luck would continue in Abestat. Brightly smiling up at the man, Cyy’cil still felt awestruck from the first night he spent, (which happened to be more of a morning) in Abestat. Maybe even his dreams would be realized in this town.

There were people in the Empire who would turn away a stranger asking for a place to stay, believing him or her to have hidden, evil intentions. Such people ended up being safe from most threats, real or imaginary, but they paid for that safety with the chance to know their fellow Allerian better.

Lauke was no such person. Raised in a home with family values, he knew in his heart that friendship, kindness, and trust were currencies more valuable than the crown or silver. Listening to Cyy'cil's request, his smile grew even wider and his eyes sparkled. "Why, I'd be happy to give you a place to stay!" he exclaimed. "My house is your house. And," he paused, then continued a little more seriously, "I have been meaning to get out more, find a job or get some training. With my housechores out of the way, I would finally have the time..."

His voice trailed off, his eyes staring out into space as he contemplated the possibilities in the world. A few seconds later, he shook himself back to reality. "Oh, but where are my manners?" he cried. "Come in, come in!" He gestured to the table and stools in the middle of the house. "Please, sit down and tell me of yourself. How did you come here to Abestat?"

Grinning his beaming smile became bigger than all of Telath. "I managed to gain passage among a merchant vessel. Unfortunately on the way over I had quite a spill." looking into himself he tried to remember once more. "I was flung into the mast during a hard storm. I'm afraid I don't remember anything before that..." pausing, Cyy'cil filled his tone with optimism again. "My guess is I was out looking for Abestat, because I needed a change in scenery." pulling up a chair at the table he continued his story. "Now my hope is to track down a job, and of course, get some training to turn this house of yours into the finest place for friends to share stories in all of Abestat." reaching out, the young man finished his story with the offer of a warm handshake.

Lauke followed Cyy'cil to the table, pulling up a stool of his own to listen to the newcomer's tale. The young human listened with great enthusiasm and attention, gasping at the magnitude of Cyy'cil's accident onboard the vessel and smiling at the mention of future plans. Being an individual of humble origins and simple ambitions, Lauke could easily identify with his new tenant. Good thing too, he thought. It just wouldn't do to have strife between a tenant and a landlord - if I can even call myself that. No, just a nice person, like Mom wanted...

"That's quite a tale," Lauke said when Cyy'cil's story ended, gladly shaking the outstretched hand. "I knew it was the right thing to do when I agreed to share my home with you. Oh, speaking of sharing," he added belatedly, "I should tell you my own tale. I have lived in Abestat all my life, and so have my ancestors. My mother told me," and his voice quieted as he removed his bandanna from his head, "that this bandanna belonged to the first of my family to live in Abestat. He was a soldier who served under Emperor Constantine as he conquered Luctadomum."

He was solemn for a moment, then smiled. "At least, that's what mom said. I don't know if it's true or not, but it looks pretty good, don't you think?" he asked, wrapping it around his forehead again and tying a knot.

Lauke's bandanna may have belonged to one of his ancestors, but it was undoubtedly his. It wasn't just the way he tied it onto his head. His bandanna formed to his figure perfectly. Smiling at this fact Cyy'cil pulled his chair back from the table.

Dusk had already rolled about Abestat, and the stars glowed up in the pale night sky. Feeling eager, but worn at the same time Cyy'cil spoke "I'm sorry to end this night so quickly on account of my tired state of mind. My mind is shutting down and a bed would work wonders for me right now.". Hoping he hadn't sounded blunt or ill mannered, Cyy'cil closed his eyes for a moment almost nodding off against the table.

"What? It's darkening already?" Lauke asked in surprise. A look outside confirmed that that was the case. "Amazing! Where does the time go? I guess that's what happens when you enjoy yourself!" he continued, laughing at his inability to keep track of time; it had seemed like only minutes ago that the day had begun. Oh well, such was life.

Another look at Cyy'cil's tired face brought Lauke back to reality once again. "Oh, but of course!" The human belatedly replied, helping his new housemate to his feet and guiding him to the bed in the corner. "This darkening, you have the bed, no arguments! And tomorrow, we'll head to the market to buy ourselves some supplies and perhaps another bed. You know, you couldn't have come at a better time; I've never realized until now how bad the place has become, but now..." he trailed off, understanding that too much new information would not be conducive to sleep. "...well, we'll do all that tomorrow."

Helping to remove Cyy'cil's boots, Lauke helped his housemate into bed so gently that if not for the slight age difference he might have been Cyy'cil's own father. "Rest easy, my friend. A new world awaits on the brightening," he said quietly, smiling. Lowering himself to the floor, he pulled out another pillow from beneath the bed and headed to the opposite corner of the house. Laying himself down on the floor, Lauke placed his head upon the pillow and prepared himself for sleep. Didn't make any money, but I have a new friend. A good brightening, Lauke thought peacefully. His last drowsy thought before sleep claimed him was that he and Cyy'cil ought to smooth those rough floorboards...

OOC: I've got an idea for an adventure. I'll start up the thread as soon as you post your response here, okay?

Almost falling asleep when his head hit the pillow, Cyy'cil managed one thought.Even if the young man couldn't remember who he was, he had high hopes for what he might become. Rolling over and curling up on his side, Cyy'cil nodded off. Adventure, honor, and his new found friend Lauke all danced into his dreams.

OOC: Adventure is my middle name. Well actually my middle name is James, but you get the point. Feel free to PM me anytime you get an idea. Just make sure this one isn't too hard, I'm too young to die.
