Lynx burst into the house barely an hour from midnight. It had been foolish of him to wait to the last minute to buy supplies for the trip, and it was unfortunate for him that his parents would be arriving home soon - he had had time to buy a cycle's worth of food and nothing more. It had occured to him that he could wait for another day when the two went out, but he pushed it aside - he didn't want to wait cycles and months for some obscure date in the future, as he had done since the brightening he had obtained the deed.
No, I leave tonight.
He tore through the dining and living rooms, maneuvering around the furniture in the darkness and in the process causing something to shatter - no time for that, though. He sprinted up the stairs and down the corridor to his room, and as soon as he entered he removed the feather mattress from his bed to reveal a pouch of money and the deed to the house in Jaedaxia. He smiled, and placed both in his pockets, then dumped the mattress back in place and attempted to the give the newly made bed that he had just destroyed some semblance of order. Once satisified, he dropped the cloth bag of rations on top of it, and changed out of his casual clothing and into the warmer pants and shirt he had bought a few days ago. He had no spare room for anymore clothing, so decided he would go with the most practical. "Gods damn it, where's my fething belt!?" he yelled, and after a minute of wasted time he grabbed a yellow sash off the dresser and tied it around his waist - it would do.
He ran into the master bedroom to get a lit candle, then brought it back to his own desk. On it sat a quill and ink and a pile of unused parchment, and with these he immediately began to write.
Quote:
Dear Mother and Father,
I am afraid it has come time for me to leave - I, as you know, wish to be a writer, but I am afraid that the city of Abestat offers no inspiration for me - if you haven't noticed, I have had writer's block for some months.
But, I have come into good fortune, and now I can escape this place. Or at least I can escape from you, father, but mother, I leave you with a heavy heart. You have always been a kind person to me, - and everyone, for that matter - unlike your husband. Never change. I will visit you again someday.
But tonight, I'm leaving. It's my first step into adulthood, and it won't be a faltering one.

He folded the letter and placed it in an envelope which he had kept in his desk. He ran down down to the kitchen as quickly as he could, grabbing his bag of rations as he went, and he placed the envelope on the counter.
He checked the candle burning in the corner of the kitchen - it was halfway through the twenty-eighth candlemark. Thirty minutes left.
Plenty of time, he thought. He sat back on the couch in the living room, wanting to relax for a moment. The last few brightenings had been so exciting - the anticipation of leaving would not allow him to sleep. He smiled a bit. "All thanks to you, Jacques, all thanks to you..." he muttered to himself. And indeed it was - he could have run away even if he hadn't met Jacques, sure, but it was thanks to the Jaedaxian that he actually had the start of a livelihood elsewhere. If the tabbiri ever met him again, he would surely... he would surely...
Lynx fell asleep.
