[tane averidus]

tane, a tall young man with short brown hair had been cutting away the dense ivy that covered most of the front of his new home for a few hours now, he intented on leaving most of it, but had to remove the bits that had completely covered his front room windows.
after cutting away the last few strands near the roots he stood up and arched his back, which made a loud cracking sound.

this is what i get for buying a place on the cheap, i supose......
stepping back he crossed his arms and had a good look at his hovel "but at least it's mine" he smiled, turning his gaze to the clear sky "i did it, finally. after all these months of wandering i've finally settled down..... " a single tear ran down his handsome face, settling into the thick stuble on his cheek "....just like i promised you all i would..."

tane stood there, just watching the clouds for a few minutes, remembering his past.
he sighed heavily before walking to the heavy oak door, once inside he moved over to sit in a large wicker chair which had seen better days.
i'll just take a quick nap, and then we'll see about fixing that hole in the roof......

Atticus had been walking around, doing a little patroling of his own. Of course, he was never really off duty in the Abestat military, but for now, he was taking his daily walk; his only time off. Roughly around 6'4, he was a very muscular guy. His real name was just Atticus Miller, but, on duty he was Private Miller. Pulling up his belt, Atticus looked down at his belly. Recently he had been getting pretty chunky. He had no idea why, it had just been happening. The arms, hands, and stomach mainly. And, the face too. Still handsome, Atticus was what many woman called cute. Of course, not dashing like he used to be. He was still wearing the classic Abestat military uniform. He figured he must look formidale, since it was night, but Atticus liked his uniform, and found no reason to change out of it. Walking along his usually route, he was surprised to a small hovel. It was the first time it had ever caught his eye. Had it always been there? Atticus looked very closly at the hovel, and noticed the difference after a while. Before, it had simply been ivy in a strange formation, but now he could see the windows. Atticus smiled. Another homeowner trying to improve his or her home. Well, he knew there were some pretty bad homes in Abestat, but he had not been aware of their condition untill now. Always living in the barracks, Atticus had it the easy way. If his barrack was in bad conditon, he screamed fire and some guy from the military base would come check it out.


Atticus was interested in who lived here. He was eager to get to know them well. Approaching the front door, he knocked, two, heavy knocks.

tane awoke with a start, falling off his chair as he so. he had been having one of his nightmares, but that wasn't what woke him.
picking himself off the floor he dusted down his trousers and headed towards the door.
as he walked past a window he noticed night had fallen, he stopped and took a quick look around the room. two lanterns hung from the wooden beams that ran across the ceiling of the room and cast enough light to give the simple room a cosey kind of feel. he had lit them earlier, before he trimmed away all that ivy, he had planned on putting them out once the sunlight could finally brighten the place, but had fell asleep first.

he reached for the door key that he had put on the window sill, then moved to unlock the door and greet his visitor.

the old door creaked with age, it opened half way before deciding that it wasn't willing to move any further, a hard tap from tane's boot made it reconsider.

standing on the doorstep was an imposing figure - a man almost as tall as tane was, wearing what appeared to be a military uniform. tane hadn't been in abestat that long, but he had seen others wearing similar clothes when he first arrived.
"good evening sir." tane said, wondering why someone from the military was at his door, though in truth he was actually glad someone had decided to come round. he had been at home for the last few days, cleaning the place out, and his only human contact had been to say "hello" to a passerby who seemed surprised that someone had moved in.
"what brings a millitary man to my home" tane smiled, and let out a quiet laugh "though i can't really call it that yet of course."

Atticus pulled his belt over his belly. Smothing his brown hair back with a thick hand, he smiled a little and began his explanation.

"Ah, well, my name's Atticus Miller. Techinically, it's Private Miller, but I'm off duty, so now it's just Atticus." Atticus gestured towards his uniform and contiuned.

"But, I was just doing noticing that someone's finally cleaned the place up a bit. Thats good. About time Abestanian homes improved a bit! Not that I would know or anything, since I spend all my time in the barracks."

"Anyways, you're not in trouble, I was just wanting to stop by and say hi. By the way, would you like a little help with your new, um . . . home?" Atticus seemed lost for words when describing the hovel. "Not that you couldn't do most of it yourself, but someone new like yourself would probably want to be finding some employment. I can give you tips on that too, if you'd like." Atticus smiled.

"Just wanting to make a newcomer feel at home, thats all. Any questions you got, and I'd be happy to answer them." Atticus smiled and placed his meaty hands on his belly.

"employment, eh?" he said, rubbing his beard. "to be honest i have'nt really thought about it that much, i've never had a real job before." tane could see that atticus looked puzzled at that fact "well you see, i'm from a.... how should i phrase it.... a travelling family, yes that'll do. we were always on the move, never staying for more than a month or so in towns and the like. living of the land, stuff like that..."

"...it was a good life..." he mused

"oh, i'm sorry, atticus " he said, suddenly snapping back to reality
"i've forgotten my manners, please come in, and tell me what jobs are going. if there's any that'll involve a bit o combat that'll be good. not that i'm violent or anything, but it good to have those sort of skills" he steped to one side
"i've not got much at the moment, but i can make us some tea."

Atticus smiled at the thought of food. He could barely resist the temptation to say, "Yes, lets eat!" But that would be rude, and a new citizen shouldn't be spending money on food for the neighbors.

"No, thats quite alright. I was just passing by. Theres no need for you to offer me anything, really, there isn't. But if you do want employment, the military will accedpt all new recruits. You'll get a free wepaon, armor, and training. For 40 crowns a cycle, it's a fairly good job, except you'll have to work there for 2 patterns."

"Well, wlecome to the neighborhood sir. I must be going now."

And with that, Atticus was off.

tane watched a while as atticus walked of into night, then thought about what he had said " the millitary, eh?" he said to himself, and let a sly smile form on his face.

"an interesting possability...." and with that he shut the door.

he went to sleep that night with many thoughts, and intentions on joining the millitary as atticus has suggested. but that could wait till the morning.....
